Systems

Changing the structures, expectations and cultures surrounding people.

Sometimes the greatest barrier isn't within the individual or even the relationship. It lies in the environment itself.

At the systems level, we look at the assumptions, expectations, practices and structures that shape how people are expected to function. The question becomes less about how we help people fit an existing system and more about how we build the capacity of that system to recognize, respond to and benefit from human variation.

Because when we create environments capable of holding different kinds of minds, we don't simply make space for neurodivergent people. We create more human systems for everyone.

"My first instinct was to replace the member to reduce the conflict. My second instinct was to call you, and that made an enormous difference."

“The Rose Corporation was faced with a challenging situation. Within a small management team, one very talented member was exhibiting aggressive and passive-aggressive behaviours that were undermining and demoralizing the team’s efforts.

My first instinct was to replace the member to reduce the conflict. My second instinct was to call you, and that made an enormous difference.

Your experience and skill provided me, and by extension my team, with a deeper and more nuanced understanding of what it was we were experiencing and, more importantly, gave us a framework to understand the individual’s point of view. You also provided us with the language skills to negotiate and de-escalate tension in real time. Subsequently, we created a “check-in” space to discuss events in close to real time.

Spending the effort to facilitate integration had spinoff benefits that were not intuitive. Members of the team had to confront their own triggers and recognize that we all have a common humanity that requires compassion, patience, and thoughtful behaviours.

I conclude by saying that the journey was, and is, not easy, and the work is ongoing. But we are a better team for your input, and our lives are enriched by being able to create a team made stronger by talent that might otherwise have been completely abandoned.”
